MDM compatibility with major CRM products

To what extent do the major tool vendors in the CRM space support master data management (MDM)? That is, if an organization sets out to define its own view of Customer using MDM techniques, would that description be compatible with the proprietary (?) schemas used by the tool vendors' solutions to represent Customer?

Major CRM vendors have in the past wanted to be the customer master for an organization.

However, with the introduction of MDM, these players have to realize they need to interconnect with major MDM solutions. This can easily be achieved with a services oriented layer. A solid data governance committee will need to be in place to enforce MDM as the master and not CRM.

For example, Siebel and IBM Infosphere can be connected relatively easily by exposing the major services within IBM to Siebel.
