Acid-addled anti-smoking ad goes up in smoke

Back to blog homepage for: The viral blog

Regular followers of this blog will recall that a couple of weeks ago I pushed the boundaries of good taste by posting a gratuitously violent anti-smoking ad. This week there is another campaign targeting the filthy weed - but taking an entirely different tack from the NHS UK.

Designed to highlight a range of different tobacco-related issues to the youth demographic, this effort by European firm Ligaris as part of the EU’s 'HELP - For a life without tobacco' campaign is completely bananas. Apparently, over the course of 12 episodes, these videos will establish a group of anti-smoking superheroes, with social networking activity on Facebook and Bebo backing up the message.

Maybe it's my age, and the lack of fizzy sugary drinks in my system, but I'm not convinced this will have the desired effect. I appreciate that anti-smoking campaign's aren't duty bound to fill the screen with graphic gore, dying smokers and blackened lungs, but you're left with no doubt about the message.

He-Man always used to deliver a moral at the end of each of his episodes. Maybe the EU could have just paid for him to deliver an anti-smoking sermon after kicking Skeletor's butt instead.

So, all you smokers, which campaign do you think is more effective? This one or the previous posting?

Am I missing something?

That's just weird.  I don't get it at all.  Maybe I'm getting old, but I hope not, I'm only 28!  Yikes!

I am not entirely sure how that is supposed to discourage people from smoking, anyone else care to fill me in?
