I can understand the question re: link between analystics and CRM, and yes analytics can be a product all on its own, but you need a data source.
For customer profitability you would normally look to your CRM system to obtain the data required to perform the anlysis.
If you already have systems (CRM, or whatever) that contain data that you beleive is: - Accurate - Complete i.e. contains all the info you needThen you do not need to consider the purchase of a CRM tool, just the analytic part. Your results could tell you that you need to invest in CRM, who knows.
Alterian is a good tool (there are others) that you should take a look at. It can pull data from numerous sources, and based on easy to configure rules, will provide you with the info you want.
