Oberthur Card Systems has announced a partnership with Entrust Technologies, a vendor of public-key infrastructure (PKI) products and e-business security.
Oberthur provides the technology and security of a card-based system, and Entrust provides the technical expertise and solutions from its global wireless solutions and core PKI groups.
Financial institutions and telecom operators will now be able to deploy the infrastructure needed to enable fixed and wireless transactions for any device using Smart Card technology. Integrating Oberthur’s advanced card management system with Entrust ensures that the PKI and certificates are incorporated into the manufacturing process.
The partnership will ensure authentication of users, and allow digital signatures on transactions. These will improve the security, reliability, and scalability of e-business initiatives.

The companies intend to develop solutions for putting WAP digital certificates on to all smart card products of Oberthur including Sim/Wim cards for telecoms, banking and authentication. Entrust.net’s WAP root key certificates will be embedded within Oberthur’s Sim/Wim cards setting the foundation for delivery of trusted services. All solutions conform to open standards including Identrus standards.
Oberthur offers SIM, WAP, UMTS, e-wallet technologies and card management systems. The major supplier of MasterCard and Visa cards, in banking, e-commerce, m-commerce and pay-TV, Oberthur employs 3,000 people worldwide, Oberthur has 30 sales offices and 13 manufacturing sites across the five continents.
