IBM buys Coremetrics: What next for the analytics sector?

IBM’s growing presence in the analytics space is set to expand again, with the announcement that it is to acquire Coremetrics.
Privately-held web analytics firm Coremetrics joins the likes of customer analytics services firm RedPill Solutions and predictive analytics software specialist SPSS on IBM’s recent shopping list.
However, while IBM already had a well-stocked business analytics portfolio, Coremetrics appears to have caught its eye because it offers a cloud-based delivery model, something that will further open up the SME sector for Big Blue, which it has been keen to pursue.
Furthermore, Coremetrics is well placed in the booming social media space, helping firms gain intelligence from social networks and online media sources, and will come with an impressive list of clients including the likes of Bank of America, Holiday Inn, Office Depot, Petco, Victoria's Secret and Virgin Atlantic Airways.
