Survey reveals aggressive Big Data strategies for business advantage

New research has revealed organisations primarily see Big Data as a business opportunity rather than an IT challenge and are aggressively attempting to master it for business advantage.

Informatica, the data integration software company, surveyed 600 IT and business professionals globally and found that 70% of enterprises are considering Big Data projects (44%), whilst 22% are planning, 13% are testing and 20% are running such projects.

The survey report Balancing Opportunity and Risk in Big Data, intended to mark the beginning of the Informatica World event, also revealed that the management of growing transaction volumes is regarded is the most important relevance of Big Data to their organisation. Additionally, the management of big interaction data – including social media data (35%), mobile device data (31%) and machine-generated data (22%) – is rising in relevance.

When asked what oganisations intend to receive from their ig Data projects, respondants cited ‘improving efficiency in business operations by doing more things with more data’ as the number one business driver (71%), followed by increasing business agility (51%).

The report further revealed the biggest Big Data challenges. Over half of those surveyed cited a lack of support for reuse and metadata in current Hadoop environments as the number one challenge, followed by lack of support for real-time streaming data (39%), concerns over poor data quality (38%), data security and privacy (38%) and the limited availability of skilled developers to manage Big Data (35%).

Girish Pancha from Informatica said: “The reality is, Big Data represents both opportunities and challenges, but those key challenges identified by our survey respondents are set to diminish with the advances introduced in the newest version of the Informatica Platform, Informatica 9.5.”
