Prince: "The internet is dead as a marketing tool"

Maverick musician Prince’s declaration that the internet is dead as a music marketing tool means that he plans to distribute his latest album as a free giveaway in a number of European newspapers instead.

In an exclusive interview with the Daily Mirror, which will distribute the new album entitled ‘20Ten’ as a freebie CD in the UK this Saturday, he said: "I really believe in finding new ways to distribute my music" - even though his record ‘Planet Earth’ was also given away for free with the Mail on Sunday in 2007. ‘Musicology’, which was released in 2004, was likewise handed out at no additional charge to people attending his concerts.

Prince, who has sold 100 million albums over the last 30 years, continued: "The internet’s completely over. I don’t see why I should give my music to [Apple’s] iTunes or anyone else. They won’t pay me in advance for it and then they get angry when they can’t get it. The internet’s like MTV. At one time, MTV was hip and suddenly it became outdated."
