Facebook Places: Here now, privacy later, advertising later still?
Facebook’s launch of location-based services may not support advertising in its first iteration, but it is already sparking privacy concerns.
The service entitled ‘Places’ will initially only be available in the US as an application for Apple’s iPhone, although support for Research in Motion’s Blackberry, Google’s Android and other mobile gadgets is expected to follow over the next few months in the UK and other territories.
‘Places’ enables mobile device users to "check in" to an address or business and instantly share their location with their Facebook connections. Although they can turn off the ability for ‘friends’ to check them in, ‘places’ tags are automatically shared with these connections by default.
