Google boning up on social networking ahead of new launch?

The rumour mill around the launch of Google Me is continuing to grind amid talk that the search engine giant has been commissioning research into social networking habits in preparation for a new launch.

The gossip was initially sparked earlier this month by Kevin Rose, the co-founder of social news site Digg, when he tweeted: "OK, umm, huge rumor: Google to launch Facebook competitor very soon. ‘Google Me’, very credible source."

Adam D’Angelo, who was Facebook’s chief technology officer for years and has now set up Q&A service Quora, subsequently also claimed on his site that the project was "real". Google’s aim, he attested, was to take on Facebook because "they realised that Buzz wasn’t enough and that they need to build out a full-first-class social network".
