Twitter has announced the launch of a weekly email service to its users, delivering “the most relevant tweets and stories” from shared connections.
The new service, set to be rolled out “over the next few weeks”, is thought to help promote popular user accounts and could provide greater opportunities for sponsored tweets.
According to the micro-blogging site, the new stories feature will mimic the recently updated ‘Discover’ tab - showing which users shared each story. Email recipients can further read stories, tweet directly from the email and see related tweets from those the user is following.
“This new email digest also features the most engaging Tweets seen by the people you follow, even if you don’t follow those who wrote them. You can see who from your network retweeted or favorited these Tweets and click “View details” to retweet, favorite, reply or view the conversation around them,” the company said in a blog post.
The news follows Twitter’s recent acquisition of Canadian start-up Summify, which sends users emails summarising top stories from their social networks, including Twitter.
In other news, Twitter also announced today that it has hit 10 million users in the UK, with 80% reportedly accessing the site from their mobile device.
