IBM introduces new SmartCloud collaboration services

IBM has expanded into the social business space with SmartCloud, a suite of services enabling businesses to collaborate in the Cloud.

Included is the highly-anticipated SmartCloud Docs suite that allows multiple users to collaborate on word processing, spreadsheet and presentation documents at the same time, which are then stored in IBM SmartCloud.

SmartCloud Docs will be part of IBM’s existing Social Business portfolio – which includes file sharing, access to communities and email in the Cloud – enabling clients to collaborate both internally and externally with partners, clients or suppliers.

IBM highlighted Forrester Research that predicted Cloud computing will grow from a $41bn business in 2010 to $241bn in 2020 whilst social enterprise apps are expected to grow at a rate of 61% through 2016.

Alistair Rennie, GM of social business at IBM, said: “As the mobile workforce moves beyond gaining access to email and calendars to collaborate and generate new ideas and be more efficient anytime, anywhere, on any device, the intersection of social, mobile, and cloud becomes even more critical.

“Social and mobile are driving business transformation, helping all aspects of an organization from marketing, human resources, sales and customer support and development leverage social concepts in their business processes. The power of cloud helps to amplify this by delivering enterprise strength computing power where and when you need it.”

Big Blue also announced new revisions to its IBM Connections platform, including the sharing of blogs and wikis, e-meeting service capabilities and improved mobile device management.

IBM SmartCloud Docs is also available for purchase as a service add on for IBM Connections and IBM SmartCloud Engage Standard for $3 per user, per month.
