Definition of shotgun marketing:
Shotgun marketing is the theory of marketing to as many people as possible.
It’s another term for mass marketing. Shotgun marketing usually attracts a large number of leads, but they’re usually of a lower quality.
Let’s say that you ran a competition where you gave away a free iPad in exchange for signing up to receive SEO tips.
You may get 1,000s of entries…
… but the majority will just be people who want to win a free iPad.
They probably won’t have any interest in SEO and will probably unsubscribe immediately.
That’s a poor result for me. I will have paid for the iPad and the cost of advertising the competition, but I’ll have little to show for it.
