The Dalai Lama may have strong views on peace, tensions between China and Tibet and be ready to take a stand on a hundred and one global issues, but he’s not up for making his thoughts known on the subject of CRM.
That’s what salesforce.com has just discovered after unveiling a promotional poster which invited journalists and employees to a San Francisco appearance of "His Holiness the Dalai Lama” organised by the American Himalayan Foundation. The poster included a giant photograph of the spiritual leader and carried the phrase: "There is no software on the path to enlightenment”.
But following objections from a number of individuals, the company has now mailed hundreds of letters, saying: "We had no right to suggest that either the American Himalayan Foundation or His Holiness support us. We made a mistake. For any harm to the reputations of His Holiness and the American Himalayan Foundation, we apologise.”
Salesforce.com has asked that invitees return the poster and agreed to pay for any expenses incurred to return them and correct the record. The company printed about 650 posters. On top of the $75,000 Salesforce.com contribution to the Himalayan Foundation, the company will donate its $25,000 ticket fee, for a total $100, 000 donation.
