NCR, AU-System and beamtrust demonstrate mobile phone interface with ATM

Hanover – At Cebit in Hanover, NCR, AU-System and beamtrust a/s today demonstrated the use of a mobile phone to communicate with an NCR Personas 77 Self-Service TouchPoint™. A consumer is thereby able to undertake an ATM transaction as one would do today using a magnetic stripe card.

In the demonstration, the consumer is able to initialize the transaction process prior to approaching the ATM, choosing the transaction type, amount and account details. At the ATM, the consumer enters the security PIN into the mobile phone and the transaction details are transmitted to the ATM. The ATM processes the transaction and dispenses the cash.

For the purposes of this demonstration the information is transmitted using IrDA. This could also be sent via Bluetooth.

During 2001 NCR unveiled the Freedom concept to the world. The live demonstration of this concept showed the use of a mobile phone or personal digital assistant to obtain cash from a futuristic egg shaped ATM, replacing the magnetic stripe cards in a consumer's pocket.

Mark Grossi, Chief Technology Officer at NCR's Financial Solutions Division, said, 'This is something we have been working on for some time. It is the latest example of a concept based on a vision of the future that has evolved into a working model.'

At the recent GSM World Congress in Cannes, AU-System and beamtrust also demonstrated how a mobile phone can be used to make payments at a point of sale. Håkan Persson, Business Area Manager at AU-System said, 'We are delighted to work together with NCR to extend our service offer into retail banking. This solution provides a bridge between mobile phone operators and financial service companies. It provides the opportunity for them to meet the increased demand for mobile payments and is geared to the increasingly mobile lifestyles of today's consumers.'
