IBM and America Online have announced that the Sun-Netscape Alliance will significantly expand the number of iPlanet Internet infrastructure and e-commerce application products that are ported to the IBM AIX UNIX platform.
Products covered under this agreement will be marketed by both IBM and the Alliance and sold by the Alliance. Currently, iPlanet Web Server, Messaging Server and Directory Server products are available on AIX. In the first half of this year, the Alliance will begin releasing AIX versions of its iPlanet Application Server, Calendar Server and Certificate Management System products as well as e-commerce applications for corporate procurement, billing, EDI, and advanced merchandising. AIX runs on IBM RS/6000 servers.
Though IBM has had what they claim to be an 'excellent working relationship with the Alliance', they expect the agreement to provide an excellent opportunity for the two companies to work together even more closely to deliver value to their clients.
Under the terms of the agreement, resources for porting, testing, and supporting the applications will be supplied by the Sun-Netscape Alliance. IBM will provide on-site technical assistance, development resources, hardware and software to the Alliance to assist in the porting. In addition, IBM and AOL will allocate funds for establishing worldwide competency centers and for the training of IBM Global Services personnel and IBM Business Partners.
