The European cellular market is no longer specialized, but is now a mass market – more people will own mobile phones than fixed phones by 2004. According to recent research from IDC, Western European cellular services subscribers will mushroom from 154 million to 200 million this year, and surpass 300 million by 2004.

“Prepaid services, with their low acquisition costs and no-strings-attached contracts, are still the main reason for this widespread success,” said Tim Sheedy, senior research analyst.

Prepaid services are expected to account for 53% of subscribers this year, and IDC expects this percentage to grow to 62% by the end of the forecast period.
