Tom Mattia has been chosen to lead EDS’ Global Communications organization. Mattia, former vice president of Public Affairs for Lincoln Mercury, replaces John Lacopo, who retired earlier this month.

Mattia has more than 30 years of professional experience, having worked as a journalist, political advisor and a communications executive in both corporations and agencies.

“I’m delighted that Tom is bringing his unique perspective, a remarkable blend of international business experience, public service, journalism and public relations to EDS,” said Don Uzzi, senior vice president of Global Marketing, Government Affairs. “Tom and his organization will play a critical role in strengthening our unified global EDS brand, raising our profile and enhancing shareholder value.”

Most recently, Mattia directed the media, government and business communications campaigns that established Lincoln Mercury as an independent business within Ford Motor Company. He used product and brand campaigns that pushed the car maker to the top of the North American luxury market for the first time in Lincoln’s history and garnered Motor Trend Car of the Year honors for the Lincoln LS.

During his five years with Ford, Mattia directed international public affairs, spearheading the company’s expansion into India, China and Russia, and re-establishing the Ford brand in Brazil, Argentina and South Africa. In addition, he served as director of Ford’s North American Public Affairs organization.

In his new role, Mattia will lead Market Relations; Public Relations at the corporate, line of business and regional levels; Community Affairs; Executive Communications; Employee Communications; and Integrated Communications Services. He will report to Uzzi.

“Technology is the hottest sector in the global market, and I can’t think of a company better positioned to leverage that sector than EDS,” Mattia said. “I’m happy to be coming back to my technology roots with EDS. It is the only global technology service firm capable of seamless delivery from consulting to implementation. I believe in EDS’ service excellence drive, commitment to customer satisfaction and results.”

Prior to joining Ford, Mattia served as the first president and COO of GCI Jennings, a market entry and communications firm for emerging technology companies. He also spent four years as executive vice president of Hill & Knowlton, an international public relations agency, where he oversaw Asian operations from Hong Kong. His main contributions were reinvigorating under-performing operations, and establishing new practices and expanding operations into such countries as Vietnam, China and India.

Mattia also held managerial and executive positions at IBM, ending a 10-year career there as director of Advanced Workstation Marketing Communications. Mattia also managed Jimmy Carter’s US presidential campaign in Vermont, and worked as a reporter for four East Coast newspapers, beginning his career at The Trenton Times in New Jersey.

Mattia will relocate to Plano with his wife, Marti, and three children, Mary, Caitlin and Mathew.

EDS solves challenges in a wide variety of industries, including communications, energy and chemicals, financial services, government, healthcare, products and retailing, and travel and transportation. The company reported revenues of $18.5 billion in 1999.
