Nokia Networks has embarked on an alliance with TietoEnator as part of a drive to expand its capacity for development in the mobile networks arena. The agreement includes the transfer of around 300 Finnish Nokia employees to TietoEnator, in order to establish a solid platform of competency, from which to base the collaboration.
Under the terms of the deal, TietoEnator plans to open a new business unit, focussed solely to Nokia's R&D operations. TietoEnator will undertake software development, testing and maintenance work in connection with the mobile corer network for both 2G and 3G and TETRA networks, basic registers and certain other network elements within Nokia's DX switching platform.
"For TietoEnator the arrangement means significant new co-operation with Nokia which is one of our key customers. TietoEnator will, after this deal, strengthen its position as a leading Nordic competence center in mobile R&D," says Pentti Heikkinen, President of Telecom & Media Business Area in TietoEnator.
"This arrangement is part of Nokia Networks' networked product creation strategy. With its excellent R&D capabilities and a solid technology platform TietoEnator was an excellent choice for us in order to build a long term relationship with benefits to both parties," says Mr. Sauli Salo, Senior Vice President, Nokia Networks. "The aim was to find a strong cooperation partner in core network R&D in order to extend our reach, and TietoEnator's competencies will complement in an excellent way our own strong R&D in mobile networks. Flexibility and faster development cycles are key requirements as we move towards the future IP based network architectures."
