The increasingly long line of Oracle executives jumping ship has continued with the defection of director of marketing Nick Barley to arch-enemy Microsoft.
Barley has been named as Microsoft's new UK director of marketing, with responsibility for all the US giant's marketing and communications across the UK. He will take charge of Microsoft's £13m UK advertising spend, a roster of 20 advertising agencies and a marketing team of 80 people. He will also sit on the executive management team at Microsoft, which is responsible for the management and growth of the business in the UK.
"In my view Microsoft is best placed to make technology relevant to the whole spectrum of society, from cradle to grave,” said Barley. “I'm excited about building and developing the team there into a world class marketing organisation with a focus on the overall customer experience," he added.
Prior to his seven years at Oracle, Barley worked for various IT companies, including Hewlett-Packard. Ironically at Oracle he spent time co-ordinating and managing campaigns and messaging that was firmly anti-Microsoft in nature.
Barley is the latest high profile defection from Oracle. Other senior executives, mostly in the US, have jumped ship to take up top posts at companies such as Veritas.
