As part of its continuing restructuring, SAP is to move into the application server market, a decision which will up the conflict with arch-rival Oracle which is currently aggressively promoting its own app server product.

SAP CEO Hasso Plattner announced at the company's Portals and Business Intelligence conference in Leipzig, Germany, that SAP would set up a new division for the development and sale of application server technology. SAP will use the app servers to build and manage integration between its own applications and rivals' technology within these portals. Effectively SAP wants to make itself a 'one-stop shop' for building collaborative applications.
