Innovation is a major characteristic of successful companies, but where should firms start? - with the customer, according to the chairman and CEO of food giant H.J.Heinz.

Heinz is arguably the most global of all US-based food companies and knows all about innovation, constantly keeping its brand in the consumer eye throughout the decades. It's even evident in its slogan: "Serving up quality, taste, convenience and innovation like no other food company on Earth".

In this video, William Johnson, chairman, president and CEO of H.J. Heinz Company explains why he believes that innovation comes from taking risks and making mistakes, and from allowing consumers' concerns and opinions into the development process.

Johnson joined Heinz in 1982 as general manager - new businesses for Heinz USA, assuming his current role in 2000. He is also a director of the Grocery Manufacturers of America, as well as an active member of the University of Texas McCombs School of Business advisory council.
