As the war of words drags on between Virgin Media and BSkyB to retain or win away customers, Virgin is consolidating its customer service operations at the cost of 150 call centre positions on Teeside.

Virgin Media employs 450 people at the former NTL site at Preston Farm Business Park in Stockton. It now plans to consolidate customer service operations in Dudley.

"We have placed 149 people at our Preston Farm Business Park in Teeside at risk of redundancy," said a Virgin Media spokesperson. "As part of our commitment to keep compulsory redundancies to an absolute minimum, we will be working with everyone affected by today's announcement to identify suitable redeployment opportunities within the business."

Virgin plans to offer those affected roles at other sites including Birmingham, Dudley and Manchester. “We realise this may be unsettling for employees, but we will do our utmost to redeploy as many affected employees as possible,” said the Virgin spokesperson.
